Chargrilled Squid with Smoked Paprika

This marinated, chargrilled squid with smoked paprika recipe is so easy and absolutely delicious! Squid is one of my favourite appetisers as it’s light, healthy (when not deep fried!) and very tasty, without being overpowering and too “fishy”!

It’s highly versatile, from the ever-popular fried calamari to simply marinated and chargrilled, drizzled with extra virgin olive oil and tossed in a salad or served on it’s own.

For this recipe, I’m keeping it really simple but there is certainly no compromise on flavour and it’s ideal as a Summer starter to bung in the middle of the table and let everyone dig in.

This recipe serves 4 people and takes just 15 minutes to cook. Preparations time 5 mins and cooking time 10 mins.

Chargrilled Squid with Smoked Paprika – what you need:

2x whole squid approx. 9 inches/23 cm long, cleaned (ask your fishmonger to clean them up for you so you’re just left with the oval shaped outer casing and the tentacles).

2x cloves of garlic, crushed.

1x whole lemon.

Extra virgin olive oil.

Smoked Paprika.

Sea salt and black pepper.

BBQ or griddle pan.

Chargrilled Squid with Smoked Paprika – what you need to do:

1. Firstly remove the tentacles from inside the squid and rinse everything under a cold tap and then pat dry with kitchen towel. Gently score the squid in diagonal lines with a normal cutlery knife.

2. Place the squid and tentacles whole in a dish and add the crushed garlic, juice of half the lemon, a generous drizzle of olive oil and a pinch of sea salt and black pepper – rub in the flavours with your hands.

3. Whilst the squid is marinating, fire up the BBQ or griddle pan and get to a medium-high temperature. Cook the squid for 3-5 minutes each side (depending on the thickness) until the outside starts to char and the fish is cooked through.

4. Slice the chargrilled squid, serve on a large plate with wedges of lemon and season with sea salt and black pepper, followed by a drizzle of extra virgin olive oil and then dust the whole plate with smoked paprika.

Put into the middle of the table and just tuck in!
